If you’re not a strong enough self motivator on your own the city you live in can either pull you up or pull you down. Nashville is very well one of those places that will pull you straight down the hang out tube where the dreams are endless but nothing ever gets done. This is something I have struggled with for the past 3 years I’ve been here. There’s so much going on here. Always something to do with friends. Always a beer to be had that you just can’t resist. I’ve heard it said time and time again that Nashville makes alcoholics of people. I was one of them. Actually, I may still be one of them. But I’m working on it. Give me time.

This is one thing I thought about a lot on my 9.5 hour trip to see one of my best friends, Heather, in Grand Rapids, MI. She just recently moved back there in July and she almost had me convinced to go with her. She told me “People get shit done there”. That it’s one of those places that creative people actually sit down and work towards something rather than go out and “network” (drink every night). I was so curious to see if this was true. Is there really such a place?

Turns out there is.

Grand Rapids, you truly are such a magical place. It’s odd cause not a lot of people really know about the city. Yes, It’s small but It’s filled with motivated and artistic people who don’t expect to get their big break by going out to drink every night just in case you meet that right person thats going to be your golden ticket. They actually put a lot of time into what they do, whatever that may be. Focusing on actually being good at what they do and having something great to offer is what they think about. Some of the people that moved there said they moved there for this specific reason. They couldn’t get anything done in other cities. Some of the people I met in between the moped rallies and sand dune extravaganzas were younger than me and better at what they do than I am at what I do. They put the idea of putting in your 10,000 hours of hard work before “hang time with friends’ or “networking”. Don’t get me wrong, they know how to party. I had some of the best warehouse party times I’ve ever had right there in Grand Rapids. But these people truly motivated me to be better. To work harder. To not be such an idiot.

Unfortunately, there’s not a huge music scene there. So it’s not quite the place for me. But i learned a lot.

Things Grand Rapids taught me:

1. Work before play

2. Pick one thing and be great not just good at it where you are now then take it to the big cities. Not the other way around.

3. 18 year old bourbon is amazing

4. Almost dying from climbing a huge sand dune just to turn back around and throw yourself rolling back down it is completely worth it.

5. Surround yourself by people who motivate you to be better rather than people who pull you down.

6. Don’t be an idiot.

Kudos to you, Grand Rapids.
